Josh Shapiro’s Failed Record Standing Up for Women

Harrisburg, PA – Governor Josh Shapiro has finally addressed the calls to condemn his campaign surrogate Ryan Boyer’s intimidating and demeaning remarks to PA State Treasurer Stacy Garrity. Sadly, his “answer” yesterday at a Lewistown press conference amounted to nothing. The Governor deflected, and by doing so, consented to the harassment of female elected officials.

Josh Shapiro’s troubling record with women isn’t new. In past years, he lectured a female legislator on her “tone” during a hearing. Then, the Governor and his Administration were slow to react when one of his top aides was accused of sexual harassment.

Now, Governor Shapiro has made more headlines for the wrong reasons. This time by standing against young female athletes. In a comment yesterday, Gov. Shapiro called supporters of a bill to ensure fairness and safety in women’s sports “extremists.” Yet, 75% of American adults in a recent poll opposed biological males participating in women’s sports.

“Josh Shapiro has a long record of failing to stand up for women, but with his comments yesterday he’s now actively standing against them,” PA SRCC Executive Director Cody Harbaugh began. “The Governor’s failure to condemn Boyer’s intimidation is just plain wrong. And now Shapiro calling 75% of the public who support safety and fairness in women’s sports ‘extremists’ is bold rhetoric from someone with his track record. Senate Bill 9 is commonsense, bipartisan reform, and what’s extreme is Josh Shapiro’s inability to stand up for women. Shapiro has shown the people of Pennsylvania his true colors.”

“It’s clear that PA House Speaker Joanna McClinton is trying to shield the Governor against the will of the vast majority of Americans by blocking SB 9 from being voted on,” PA SRCC Communications Director Michael Straw added. “This is a commonsense bipartisan reform, what’s extreme is Gov. Shapiro and Speaker McClinton’s inaction and inability to stand up for women in our Commonwealth.”
